Toe-to-toe with Street Fighter IV

October 31, 2008 by Insider Staff

Street Fighter IVFew videogame series have been as long running and successful as the Street Fighter beat ‘em ups, and Street Fighter IV is certainly the most eagerly awaited in the saga’s history. It’s not out over here until February 2009, but The Insider was lucky enough to have an early play, and can happily report that it’s back to its brilliant basics with a splash of next-gen genius.

Don’t be fooled by the game’s stunning visuals – this is pure, 2D bliss in the gameplay stakes, with some slick pseudo 3D visuals layered expertly on top to spice things up. Sure it’s accommodating to button-bashers, but there’s extra finesse available to seasoned pros of the series, as you can truly step into your fighter’s skin and explore new technical depths, with added features such as a smart and explosive new counter-attack moves that erupt in serious onscreen eye candy.

Fans of the series will be right at home, picking up favourite combos where you left off, and the best characters (Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li et al) return along with a whole new cast of brawlers.

Expect this to revamp the genre when it comes to PS3, PC and Xbox 360 early next year.

Top talents

Classic characters
All your favourites make a return, fleshed out in glorious 3D.

Arcade styling
It’ll be in the arcades too, and you replicate that experience at home with a six button joystick
panel.

Back to basics
The genre has been in decline for a decade, but Street Fighter IV shows that 2D fighting games haven’t been KO’d.

Going up against
Soul Calibur IV – The best 3D fighter out there, hands down.

Tekken 5 – Can SFIV win old school fighters fans back from the Tekken series?

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe – When it’s released, this will rival any Marvel vs Capcom game for crossover class.
