Canon HG10
August 20, 2009 by Insider Staff
Gone are the days of shooting fuzzy home movies fit only for You’ve Been Framed. Todays high-definition movie makers like this Canon HG10 camcorder offer all the trappings an aspiring movie mogul could need. But is it enough? Read our full review to find out.
Pros
Canon’s most affordable Full HD (1080) camcorder is a beauty. The 10x zoom lens is optically stabilised to keep its pin-sharp movies even sharper in low light and the logical menus are easily navigated. A built-in 40GB hard drive can shoot up to 15 hours of HD video, and films have a natural clarity to them that looks stunning when played back on a High Def telly. The camera flash and video light a welcome find at this price.
Cons
There’s little to complain about, although the HG10’s 505g weight is enough to get tiring after carrying it around all day. The electronic viewfinder is too small to be of much use – stick to the 2.7-inch LCD for framing and your eyes will thank you.
Verdict
A classy, friendly introduction to High Definition movie-making that will have you smiling as you shoot. There’s nothing here to bewilder debut directors and while more experienced cinematographers might bemoan the lack of the fiddliest of tweaks, the HG10 still has a choice of exposure and focus modes, scene settings and great low light performance. Recommended.
