New MacBooks are go!
October 14, 2008 by Insider Staff
Apple has raised the bar again in the laptop computer stakes. Steve Jobs has just unveiled the new MacBook range, and they’re possibly even sexier than the new iPods, but if, like us, you were hoping for high-def next-gen additions you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Every model – Air, regular and Pro – has been updated with a stylish glass trackpad, aluminium casing and a memory upgrade. There’s no Blu-ray or HDMI output sadly, but the entire range now come with graphics cards which guarantee stunning visuals. And no, no netbook either, though the Air now comes in a 128GB SSD flavour.
Top talents
Tactile touch
A clickable multi-touch glass trackpad without buttons? Laptops just don’t get more chic – but it being Apple expect top usability too.
Great graphics
Take your choice: every single new model has a storming NVidia 9400 card on board, and the 15″ Pro even has two.
Metal might
Aluminium casing gives the new range of MacBooks a stylish steel feel.
Going up against
Asus EEE 1000 – It’s nowhere near as powerful as the Air, but much smaller and cheaper.
Dell Studio 15 – A mid-range laptop with HDMI output, and you can install Blu-ray. A serious competitor to the new regular MacBook.
Toshiba Qosmio X300-11s – No Mac OSX, but this is every bit as powerful as a MacBook Pro.
