8-megapixel Samsung Pixon – the best camera phone yet?

October 14, 2008 by Insider Staff

Samsung M8800 PixonWith manufacturers shoving more and more megapixels into mobile phone cameras, it falls on other photographic-related bells and whistles to entice shoppers into parting with their cash. With 5 and even 8-meg phone-snappers becoming widespread, Samsung has decided to boost the new M8800 Pixon’s appeal by loading the camera with portrait-friendly functionality and tech.

While the Pixon isn’t a full-blown smartphone, it supplements its camera skills with broadband-speed HSDPA 3G, a big touchscreen and a skinny 13.8mm-thick frame.

The Pixon’s camera comes with a smile shot feature that won’t fire the shutter until your subject is grinning. Hey presto: no more scowling shots on your memory card!

Advanced Shake Reduction negates the effects of your wobbly hands, allowing you to shoot detailed 8-megapixel photos without too much blur.

Touch me

The 3.2-inch touchscreen automatically switches orientation with the camera, thanks to an accelerometer, and is large and crisp enough that you can check out your shots on the move.

Going up against

Nokia N82 – Nokia’s best ever camera phone sports “only” 5-megapixels, but also totes a proper xenon flash for great low-light work.

LG KU990 Viewty – Another touchscreen-based camera phone, the 5-megapixel Viewty does a neat sideline in super-slow motion video.

Sony Ericsson K850i – Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot range is rightfully well regarded by mobile phone shutterbugs, and this 5-megapixel model combines great optics with a fantastic suite of photographic features and editing tools.
