Garmin Nuvi 250W

May 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Garmin Nuvi 250WIf you drive on the continent as much as you do here, the Nuvi 250W’s preloaded maps are a must. Finds out what the cons are too in our in-depth review.

Pros
Garmin’s route planning software is some of the best we’ve seen, correctly predicting town and road names as you type in addresses, and calculating sensible routes in a flash. The maps are great, too, with clear indications of what road you’re on and where you should turn, complete with time and speed information. Excellent European maps of 33 countries cover less common destinations (Romania, Slovakia and Czech Republic) as well as our nearest neighbours.

Cons
While the 4.3-inch touchscreen is bright and sharp, the logic of a widescreen display escapes us – you just end up seeing more confusing roads to each side of your actual route.

Verdict
Another great navigator from Garmin, whose GPS units just get easier and smarter all the time. The 172g 250W is just about portable for use outside the car but feels extremely luxurious when you’re behind the wheel. Points of interests are fairly comprehensive and the pre-loaded speed camera list is as good as any. The on-board digital photo viewer and currency converter are a bit gimmicky, though.
