Asus beefs up the Eee PC

Asus has crammed a bigger screen, improved processor and roomier storage into its dinky little portable wonder kid, the Eee PC.

The tiniest laptop computer around just got a lot better.

The lowdown
The Eee PC has been hard to get hold of since it launched in November, but Asus isn’t holding back on a new version. The Eee PC900 packs double the memory of the original at 1GB, and packs a 12GB flash drive that’s invulnerable to damage from dropping or shaking.

There’s also a bigger screen, measuring 8.9-inches compared to the original’s seven-inches. As before, there’s a special version of the Linux operating system installed, although with a roomier hard drive and beefed up memory there’s nothing to stop you installing Windows XP on this little beauty.

Going up against…
Apple MacBook Air – The Air is slimmer than the Eee, but much larger in all other respects. It’s also much more expensive and can’t compete with the Eee for budget computing in a tiny shell.

Toshiba R500 – Light as a feather, and packed with luxuries such as a DVD drive and fingerprint scanner, this ultra-portable laptop packs a hefty price tag, though.

Sony Vaio TZ - Tiny, powerful but expensive, Sony’s TZ range pack all the features you’d expect, and even have a special media mode that shuts down Windows to conserve power, but still lets you watch films or listen to music.
