Apple iPod Touch 8GB
October 16, 2008 by Insider Staff
Steve Jobs has been touting the new iPod Touch as the “funnest iPod ever”, but is it all it’s cracked up to be? Get the lowdown in our review.
Pros
The iPod Touch breezes through music and video playback, boasting a huge 3.5-inch screen that is by the far the sharpest on test. As well as a great media player, you get a Wi-Fi web browser that lets you buy songs directly from iTunes, the choice of hundreds of games at Apple’s App Store and great battery life – up to 36 hours playback for music, and 6 for video. Tunes sound excellent too, through a good pair of headphones.
Cons
The Touch is on the hefty side (8.5mm thick and 115g) if you’re carrying a phone around as well, and you might miss the fun sat nav and online functions of the iPhone. Even without the iPhone’s stinging 18-month contract, the Touch is pretty expensive – about twice the price of the SanDisk player we also tested.
Verdict
The Touch is far more than just a poor man’s iPhone, although you will get just as many envious glances, at least until someone asks you to look something up. If you watch a lot of video clips on the move, the Touch has enough battery life and visual glitz to wow anyone, with a built-in speaker even letting two people watch at a pinch. As for gaming, it’s not quite a rival to the Nintendo DS just yet, but the motion sensor, touch screen and affordable games means that casual gamers finally have a genuine choice.
