Nintendo DS Lite
October 7, 2008 by Insider Staff
Nintendo’s dual screen pocket plaything reinvented portable gaming with sublime touch-based action and a killer catalogue of games. Get the full verdict on the Nintendo DS Lite here…
Pros
This dinky dual screen handheld console is typical Nintendo: while it lacks the high-end graphics and multimedia talents of the rival PSP, it’s packed with hundreds of excellent games and lots of innovation – particularly when it comes to controls. A touch sensitive screen and microphone allows you to interact with games in new ways, while built-in Wi-Fi makes multiplayer match-ups a cinch.
Cons
The graphics technology in the DS has been around for several years now (despite the slinky Lite makeover), and it’s starting to look a little tired. Sony’s PSP has been reinvented three times and boasts superb graphics, but the DS’s worn-out visuals and distinct lack of digital video, photo and music compatibility mean it could certainly benefit from a hardware upgrade (update: the DSi could be it!).
Verdict
Despite its advancing years and outmoded low resolution graphics, the DS Lite is still the better of the two main handheld consoles from a gaming point of view: there are hundreds of brilliant titles out there, from good old-fashioned platformers to brain-honing puzzlers and high involving, plot-driven role-playing games. If content truly is king, the DS Lite has got to be the handheld gaming device of choice.
