Nintendo Wii

Nintendo WiiFlaunting true motion control innovation in the face of it’s graphics-proud peers, the Nintendo Wii is anything but conventional. The underdog, it proves it’s got serious bite in the next-gen console playground.

Pros
The Wii’s motion sensing controller offers a totally new way of interacting with games – simpler, more involving and more active than using an old-fashioned joypad. For those reasons, this is a console that appeals to a wider audience base than the PS3 and Xbox 360. It also offers loads of old school classics via its Virtual Console download service.

Cons
While the Wii is big on party games and mini games – the sort of titles that provide huge amounts of fun over a short period – traditional gamers will struggle to find the deep, involving single player games for which Nintendo consoles were once famed. They do exist, but there aren’t many. Also, the Wii’s graphical and audio abilities are a generation behind its rivals’, and there’s almost no media functionality.

Verdict
While the Wii doesn’t offer the graphical eye candy and ear-nibbling surround sound delivered by the PS3 and Xbox 360, it’s arguably catering to a completely different market: almost anyone, old or young, can pick up the Wii Remote controller and get involved with a Wii game – and many of these people wouldn’t have the first idea about how to use an Xbox 360 joypad. That said, the console has a glut of this kind of accessible, simple game, while there are far too few single player classics like Super Mario Galaxy. Also, now that the Xbox 360 Premium is cheaper, the Wii’s price tag is starting to look a tad steep.
