Sony PlayStation 3
October 7, 2008 by Insider Staff
Sony pushed the technology envelope further than its rivals with PS3, injecting it with brutal power courtesy of the Cell processor and other high-tech talents. But was that enough to make it king console? Get the full verdict now.
Pros
This curvy black box is the most versatile of the next gen consoles, able to deliver high definition Blu-ray movie playback, web surfing and digital music and video streaming as well as gaming eye candy. It’s beautifully designed too: it’s slick and quiet in operation, and its XMB user interface makes it a cinch to use.
Cons
But that flexibility and high design comes at a steep price, when compared to its rivals. The PS3 has also proved something of an underachiever with games – the Xbox 360 boasts a better selection of top class games – but this should improve with time.
Verdict
Despite the disappointing scarcity of truly killer games two years into its lifespan, the PlayStation 3 should be a tempting purchase for any fan of digital entertainment. Hi-def movie fans will love the fact that it’s one of the finest, most affordable and most easily upgradeable Blu-ray Disc players around, while its built-in Wi-Fi means it’s a dab hand at wirelessly grabbing digital movies, photos and music from your home PC. Throw in factors like the web browser, superb build quality and likelihood of better games coming in the near future – and well, it’s a great machine.
