Ask the expert: Remote controlled helicopters

August 24, 2009 by Insider Staff

Bladerunner Nano 3Q. I want to buy my kid one of those indoor remote controlled helicopter. But what should I look out for, and I don’t want to spend more than 50 quid. Any recommendations?

A. You’re a brave parent, and no mistake! Handing over control of whizzing blades to your offspring means you’ll be running away from them soon after! But that’s all part of the fun, and for less than £50 there are plenty of options to choose from. We’ve rounded up three of the best below.

Nano-copterSolution 1: Nano-copter
This ultra-small flying machine offers aerial fun without emptying your wallet. Less than 15cm long, it’s made of super-tough foam that’ll resist impacts, as well as a dual-rotor design to limit damage from the (inevitable) crashes. Fully charged in just over 10 minutes, it’s controlled by an infra red remote, so you’ll need to be within sight of it to keep it flying.

Picco Z Micro HelicopterSolution 2: Picco Z Micro Helicopter
If you fancy a spot of helicopter dogfighting, check out the Picco Z Micro Helicopter. Its remote is a two-channel version, so if you buy a pair of choppers you’ll be able to control them independently! The Picco Z is 18cm long, and features an auto-stability system, meaning its less hassle to hover, and easier to steer.

Bladerunner Nano 3Solution 3: Bladerunner Nano 3
The blades on this tiny chopper might not look as cool as others, but since they’re encircled by a loop of plastic, there’s less chance of them getting snapped in a crash landing. There’s an automatic hover function too, so you can leave the ‘copter hanging in mid air, without touching a button! Charging is handled by the controller, and it’s ready to go in under 15 minutes!
