September 29, 2008 by Insider Staff

Dodge the busy streets and do the Christmas shopping on your mobile insteadForget schlepping around town looking for Christmas inspiration. Pull up a chair in a quiet cafe, whip out your mobile, and get your Christmas shopping done without all the traipsing! We’ll show you how to pin down the closest stores with the right presents in stock, avoid getting ripped off, and even buy direct from your mobile phone!

Step 1: Track down stores, with or without GPS
As long as your phone can run applications, it can track down nearby shops. Just download Google Maps Mobile and install it on your handset. Tons of models from all manufacturers are supported, and if you don’t have GPS, it’ll still find your location by using the mobile network.

It’s surprisingly accurate, sometimes to within a few metres, and since its powered by Google you can search for stores by name, or simply by tapping in the type of thing you’d like to buy. If the store has a website, that’ll show up too, so you can tap into it on your phone.

Step 2: Check prices on the move
PriceRunner Mobile can help you find the best price, no matter where you are. It uses your phone’s Internet connection to look up prices from the web. Simply tap in the details of the product you’re after, and it’ll serve up the lowest prices straight away. If they’re cheaper than the store price, you’re better off shopping online. Check out our simple how to, and you’ll have PriceRunner Mobile up and running on your phone in no time.

Must-have accessories
Mobile phone and uncapped data tariff – To research presents and buy items from your phone you’ll need to use the web. That means making sure your phone has a web browser, and an appropriate tariff. If you don’t already have web access enabled on your tariff, most mobile networks will open up unlimited browsing for just a few extra pounds each month.
