Nikon CoolPix S60

August 18, 2009 by Insider Staff

Product nameCompact camera group test winner, the Nikon CoolPix S60 is one of the slickest pocket shooters out there. Read on to find out why it’s the must have compact photo maestro…

Pros
Touch technology is all the rage and the huge 3.5-inch touchscreen on this Nikon is just begging to be poked and stroked. It can be used to control most camera functions, such as Face (and even Smile) Detection. The 5x zoom lens here is the biggest on test, letting you get right up close to the action. An all-round top performer.

Cons
The touch screen can be a bit tricky to use at first, especially when you’re after a less common feature, and Nikon’s Vibration Reduction isn’t as good as real optical stabilisation. But these are minor drawbacks on a stunning style camera.

Verdict
Nikon has stuffed the svelte S60 with all manner of automatic goodies – there’s even an anti-blink lock to prevent your subjects looking sleepy. But the touchscreen keeps it easy (if not particularly quick) to use. Photos look very crisp and sharp from the 10-megapixel chip, although you might want to boost the colours to see them at their vibrant best. And don’t be fooled by the HDMI connection for HD TVs – the S60 shoots video in old-school standard definition only. Still, the best choice for style, features and price.
