Top of the tree
Acer Aspire 5920G-302G25Mi
Best price: £572 on 28 February 2008
Just one shufti at the Acer Aspire 5920G-302G25Mi’s specs next to its price and you know it represents unbelievably good value. The combination of a fast Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz chip and 2048MB of memory means apps and software are loaded with a minimum of fuss while the 250GB hard drive for storage is a generous helping indeed. You definitely won’t feel short changed with this lap dancer.

Rising star
ASUS EeePC
Best price: £222.28 on 28 February 2008
This dinky ultra-portable laptop has been whipping up a storm. With a cheeky footprint smaller than a magazine, it’s been mega-popular with punters and young people wanting an unassuming, lightweight notebook to do the basics – access web mail, surf the internet via built-in Wi-Fi and 7-inch display and word processing. There’s not a whiff of Microsoft Windows either with a Linux based OS directing proceedings. Just watch it rise to the top.
Up against: ASUS EeePC 2GB model
Unsung hero
Sony Vaio VGN-AR61
Best price: £669.14 on 28 February 2008
Sony’s AR Vaio series of laptops are prepped as desktop replacements and the VGN-AR61 appears pretty decent value just below the £700 mark. Its expansive and impressively bright 17-inch display takes centre stage, ably backed up by capable 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip and 2048MB of memory that smoothly and quickly fire up your apps.
Up against: Toshiba Satellite P200-1EE

Apple MacBook
Best price: £650.86 on 28 February 2008
It may not be the most impressive spec’ed laptop in our top 50 but according to the experts this Apple MacBook treads the perfect balance between portability and power. Its intuitive Mac OSX also makes for a great alternative to Microsoft Windows while its 2GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo chip gives it some much needed grunt. Plus it looks the bees-knees.
