The new, oh-so colourful iPod nano

September 10, 2008 by Insider Staff

The new iPod nanoAs MP3 players go, the iPod nano is almost as iconic as the original white iPod. Sure enough, Apple’s top dog Steve Jobs revealed a fourth generation nano at the Apple launch yesterday, and bundled with new features in an even curvier shell, it didn’t disappoint.

Jobs claimed it was the thinnest nano yet, and despite doubling its capacity to 16GB he’s right – it’s a mere 6.2mm thin (almost slim enough to cut up an Apple). Somehow Apple has squeezed in the same screen from the older version, but now an accelerometer means you can tilt it to display all your album covers in whatever orientation you like. And as if it needed to be made more attractive, it comes in nine striking shades to make them even more stand-out slivers of audio tech. And with 24 hours of audio playback and around 4 hours of video skills, it’s armed to keep you entertained even on the longest of long hauls

Superb shape
The tapered look is almost sexy, but don’t let it fool you – it’s still Apple’s thinnest iPod yet.

Genius bar
This new feature compiles playlists of similar songs for you at the touch of a button, using a database of user favourites.

Go hands free
Apple’s new minimalist headphones let you control your iPod nano from a tiny remote on the cord to keep your player in your pocket, away from prying eyes.

Coming: Now

Going up against
Creative Zen – Another flash memory music player for the masses.

iPod Nano 3G – The third-gen nano could be a bargain now if new features don’t appeal.

Sony NWZ-A828K – Like the nano, Sony’s mid-level addition to the Walkman brand offers great video on the go.
