Top tips on picking the perfect plasma TV

Pioneer KuroConfused about the benefits of plasma? Bamboozled by the choices on offer? Be bewildered no more!

Our top tips will steer you through telly hell and into Hi-Def heaven.

Step 1: Size matters
Plasma TVs only make sense in larger sizes. If you’re looking for a smaller screen, you’ll get more value from an LCD. However, cross the boundary into 50 inch territory, and you’ll get more screen space for your money with plasma.

Step 2: Get back to black
The technicalities of flatscreen backlighting are duller than a page of TV stats, but all you really need to know is plasma screens deliver deeper blacks, while LCDs typically produce dark greys instead. The filters applied to the screens also make a difference. Pioneer’s Kuro range are amongst the finest available, using patented filter technology to perform spectacularly.

Step 3: Toughen up!
If your TV is prone to poking by kids, or being knocked by clumsy adults, check out Panasonic’s Viera plasma tellies. They feature Tough Panel technology to reinforce the screen, making it impervious to damage, and much easier to clean.

Of course, other models use a glass screen too, which could be easier to take care of than an LCD, which projects images onto a plastic film, susceptible to damage, and harder to clean properly.

Must-have accessories
Freeview tuner – The large size of plasma screens means they’re typically designed for home cinema fans. They’re the same sort of people who will already have a video source. As a result, it’s common for plasma screens to come without a built-in tuner. They’re a dumb screen, and that’s it. You’ll need a set top box to get Freeview, or any other picture for that matter.
