How to unlock your iPhone 3G’s hidden talents
June 1, 2009 by Insider Staff
The iPhone 3G is a smart phone that’s stuffed to bursting-point with high tech skills, but chances are you’re still not squeezing the most out of it. Unlock its hidden talents with these simple steps, and you’ll soon be the envy of everyone – even those with an iPhone of their own.
Step 1: Copy and paste
The iPhone doesn’t usually let you copy and paste text. Apple says its working on it as a feature in the future, but in the meantime, you can download and install MagicPad for your handset, and be copying and pasting in no time!
In the near future, it’ll even let you pass copied text to other apps too. Grab it through the App Store on your iPhone, or through iTunes for £2.39 (price on 26 August 2008).
Step 2: Picture messaging
The iPhone 3G doesn’t do picture messaging, which is a shame. However, you can get almost the same functionality by installing MobileChat. It’s an instant messaging app that’ll put you in touch with any of your mates using AIM, ICQ, Windows Live or MSN, GoogleTalk, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Jabber or Apple MobileMe.
You’ll be able to send text messages, and unlike many chat apps for iPhone, it’ll send and receive photos too.
Step 3: Tune into TV
Few phones can tap into on-demand TV with the same style as the iPhone. Point its browser to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer and you’ll see a specially-tweaked version of the BBC iPlayer for Apple’s handset.
Everything from the menus to the video feeds is created to squeeze the best performance from the iPhone, serving up the last seven days telly at the poke of a finger. You’ll need to be within a Wi-Fi hotspot to use it though.
Step 4: Replace your laptop
The iPhone is powerful enough to act as a laptop replacement, serving up presentations, Word documents and even Excel spreadsheets. The only problem is storage, but that can be solved with DataCase, a simple app that taps into tons of online storage. Fire it up and you’ll find your iPhone 3G has become a portal to all your files stored online.
Step 5: Give us a tinkle!
The iPhone 3G’s the only mobile in the world that’ll also pull double duty as a piano! Download Pianist and you’ll see its Multi touch screen working wonders by recognizing more than one finger at once. Lay your pinkies on it, and you’ll be able to knock out chords of up to five notes.
Must-have accessories
TV cable – Tap into the iPlayer, plug your iPhone into a TV and you’ve got a proper on-demand entertainment solution. Great for livening up boring hotel rooms, and dodging the cost of pay-per-view movies!
