Ask the expert: Home Cinema Systems – Discreet solutions

June 29, 2009 by Insider Staff

Bose LifeStyle 18Q. I want to get surround sound home cinema set-up without the clutter. What are the best and most discreet options available?

A. Installing a home cinema system can be a chore. There are cables to hide, speakers to make space for and if you’re not careful it can all look a bit ugly. It doesn’t have to be that way though, we’ve rounded up three discreet solutions to bringing surround sound into your home.

Denon DHT-FS3Solution 1: All-in-one solution
If you can’t stand speakers being dotted around the room, consider an all-in-one soundbar. It’ll sit under the TV, and uses multiple speakers inside one box to bounce sound around the room. Home cinema buffs will tell you it’s not true surround sound, but if you invest in a top quality model like the Denon we’ve chosen, it can sound just as good. Plus, it’s very simple to set up and means less clutter too.
Best option: Denon DHT-FS3- £530

Logitech Z-5450Solution 2: Go wireless
If it’s trailing cables rather than multiple speakers putting you off surround sound, check out wireless options. They’ll beam sound direct to speakers, so there’s no need to wire them up. Great for rooms with doorways between cable-runs, and ideal for anyone worried about trip hazards! You’ll spend less time tripping over cables and more time enjoying the sound.
Best option: Logitech Z-5450-£255

Product nameSolution 3: Go miniature!
Choose the right kit, and you can get great sound out of tiny speakers. Bose create home cinema kit without the clutter, thanks to their titchy speaker technology. It’s unbelievably neat, and means you’ve got no excuse for not filling each corner of the room with sound. Unfortunately, its minimalist style comes with a hefty price tag.
Best option: Bose LifeStyle 18-£1,495
