How to get the most from your iPod Touch

August 19, 2008 by Insider Staff

iPod TouchIntro The iPod touch is much more than a fancy music player, it’s a full-blown portable computer! Follow our simple steps and we’ll show you how to get the most out of it, from listening to music to helping you out around town!

Step 1:
Sort out your software
If you bought an iPod touch in the last month or so, you’ll see lots of applications on the home screen. However, if you don’t see the App Store you’ll need to fork out for a software update from the iTunes Store.

Connect your iPod to your PC or Mac, follow the instructions and download the sofware update for your iPod. Wait for it to automatically install, and for your iPod to restart. Then you’ll be ready to start grabbing new apps!

Step 2:
Install away!
You can grab apps for your iPod touch by using the App Store button on the device’s home screen whenever it’s in a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can also browse them through iTunes on your computer, and sync them to your iPod in the same way as you would music or movies.

There are thousands of apps available, so we’ve picked out a few favourites to show you how to get the most from your iPod touch. You can see all iPod touch compatible apps here.

Last.fm (£free)
Bored of the music on your iPod? Get yourself to a Wi-Fi hotspot, fire up this application and you’ll be able to stream music from your favourite artists straight away. It’ll even find and recommend music you’ll like by monitoring your listening habits.

Labyrinth (£2.99)
Your iPod touch is more than capable of challenging the PSP or DS Lite when it comes to pocket gaming. Download this simple maze game to see how sensitive the accelerometer is, and just how addictive iPod gaming can get!

Facebook (£free)
Get yourself to a Wi-Fi hotspot and keep in touch with all your friends through Facebook. Great for wasting time, or just gossiping on the go. You can even tag photos and upload pictures from your iPod’s photo gallery.

Remote (£free)
Use your iPod touch to control any PC or Mac using iTunes on the same network. You’ll be able to choose songs, control their playback and fiddle with the volume without going anywhere near a keyboard or mouse. It’ll also work with Apple TV and Airport Express base stations.

Where? (£free)
Whip out your iPod touch in town and this app will pin down your location using triangulated Wi-Fi hotspots. Once it knows where you are, it’ll recommend all sorts of near by attractions. If you friends are using it too, it’ll even plot them on the map using its ultra-smart Buddy Beacon feature.

Must have accessories
PC or Mac-You’ll need a computer to update your iPod if it doesn’t already have the App Store installed.

Wi-Fi router – To get the most out of the iPod’s app abilities, it’ll need to connect to the internet through one of these.
