How to turn your N95 into a party boombox
February 27, 2008 by Insider Staff
The N95 has all the skills required to power your next party. Alongside its personal navigation, five megapixel camera and stonking screen come a raft of multimedia pockets of joy.
With the ability to beef up storage too, there’s no reason why your N95 can’t adapt itself to being your very own party piece. Time to tap into its hidden talents and make your next social gathering go with a swing.
Step 1: Grab some speakers
The N95 has a fairly powerful pair of speakers built in, but they’re no match for a decent pair of add-ons. Luckily, the N95 also packs stereo Bluetooth, so there’s no need to get tangled up in wires just to blast your music.
Battery-powered portable speakers, such as the LINX BTUBE-S or Nokia MD-5W, will let you take your music out and about too.
If you’ve already got a speaker dock for an iPod you can easily convert it for use with a Bluetooth mobile by slotting in an Intempo Digital BTA 01, but whatever type of speaker system you use, just pair it with your mobile and keep it in your pocket. As long as you’re in the same room as the speakers you’ll always have control of the music!
Step 2: Plug in and party
If you don’t fancy faffing with Bluetooth, use the N95’s wired headphone socket to hook up some more traditional cabled speakers. Any speaker set with a 3.5mm connection will work, but make sure you pick a set like the Cygnett Groove Cell that include the necessary cable to hook up to your phone.
Step 3: Serve music over Wi-Fi
The N95 is a DLNA-certified device. That means it can serve media to other devices on your home network. The most common device around that can receive that content is Sony’s PlayStation 3. Just tap into your N95’s ‘Tools’ menu and tap ‘Connectivity’ followed by ‘Home media’ and set ‘Visibility in network’ to ‘visible’ and ‘Music’ to ‘share’. Now connect it to your home network using Wi-Fi and fire up your PS3. The N95 will show up as a source under music.
Must have accessories
PlayStation 3 – Streaming music through Sony’s console is the slickest way to get music into the living room using the loudspeakers built into your TV. Although if you’re not going to make use of its gaming and movie skills too, it’s a major case of overkill here!
Intempo Digital BTA 01 – convert any iPod speaker dock into a fully-fledged Bluetooth speaker for use with your mobile. It’ll save you buying separate speakers for both devices and means you’ll get more value from your original purchase.
LINX BTUBE-S – some of the slickest, and most portable Bluetooth speakers around. Their tubular design is easily slipped into a backpack, and they’re surprisingly loud too!
