How to share Hi-Def home movies online

August 24, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony HDR-UX1ESo you’ve shot a home movie in crystal clear HD, but how to share it with friends? By hosting it online, of course! By using free web service Vimeo you’ll be able to show off your HD footage in the best quality possible.

Step 1: Sign up to Vimeo
Vimeo is free to join, and is one of the very few online video services to accept uploaded video files in 720p, or HD quality.

Sign up at www.vimeo.com, and you’re all set to start sharing your movies.

Step 2: Export correctly
Before you upload your movie to Vimeo, you’ll want to edit it using a computer, so only the best bits make it to the web.

When it comes to exporting your video, make sure it’s being saved using the HD preset (or in 720p resolution). Also, ensure the audio quality is set to 128 kbps. If you’re offered the chance to change the “data rate” of your saved file, make sure it’s at 5000 kbits/sec.

All these settings might sound confusing, but they’ll leave you with a top notch HD video that’s ready to upload to Vimeo. Once it’s there, it’ll be downscaled, but the quality will look fantastic, and when the service updates in the future, it’ll look even better, thanks to your top-quality source video.

Step 3: Share the links!
Now your file is online, you simply need to send the link to friends and family. They’ll have the option of watching it in HD quality, or standard quality if their connection isn’t fast enough to cope.

Vimeo also features ‘groups’ where you can submit your video if it falls within a specific subject. Share your work, and get feedback from viewers!

Must have accessories
HD Camcorder – Obviously, to shoot HD video, you’ll need a HD camcorder. Don’t worry too much about getting one that records in 1080p if you want to post videos online, as there aren’t any sites that support files that large. Yet.

PC or Mac – You’ll need a computer to edit and upload your movies. Macs come with iMovie software pre-installed, and the latest version works just fine with HD footage. If you’re using a PC, you might need to buy HD-capable editing software.
