Adidas breaks out miCoach fitness phone
February 27, 2008 by Insider Staff
The Adidas miCoach is an all all-in-one fitness trainer, and the only phone to work with a heart monitor and step counter.
It’ll also work with an online fitness tracker to keep an eye on your goals and progress. The best bit? It’s coming your way soon.
The lowdown
Adidas just announced its first ever mobile phone, and it’s one of the smartest around. Built by Samsung, it’ll integrate with a special heart sensor and step counter to record your progress and encourage you to run in the best way possible.
As well as capturing data about your exercise sessions, the phone can give you instructions to coach you along the way, telling you to slow down if your heart rate is too high, or queuing up your favourite power ballad MP3 as you start to flag.
Top talents
Heart monitor – this is the only phone that works with a heart monitor, allowing it to measure your body’s reaction to exercise, rather than relying on a simple step count.
Tailored training – on your first run the phone will watch your performance carefully, tuning future exercises based on fitness, not an arbitrary ‘level’ chosen by you.
Matched music – the miCoach phone can tailor playlists to suit the pace of your run, as well as giving audible prompts along the way to keep you in your target heart rate zone.
Coming out Mid-March
Going up against…
Nike + iPod – Apple’s pedometer will only work with Nike+ shoes, and can’t keep track of your heart rate. You’ll also need to buy an iPod if you don’t already have one.
Nokia 5500 Sport – This pedometer-packing phone will also keep track of your progress, but lacks the personalisation of Adidas’s new handset.
Sony Ericsson W580i - Another phone with a pedometer, but one that’ll automatically measure your steps over a whole day, as well as timing your runs
