How to stream movies from your PC to Nintendo Wii

July 6, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nintendo WiiWith a Wii next to your TV, you’ve got everything you need to shovel movies from your PC to the living room without the need for cables.

It’s more than capable of throwing your favourite films and TV shows to the telly. Just follow our simple steps, and we’ll have you challenging even the most macho media centres with Nintendo’s little white knight in no time.

Step 1: Install Orb on your PC
Before streaming media, you’ll have to prepare your PC. Download and install Orb, get it running and tell it where you keep your movie files, music and photos.

It’s free, and will work without a hitch, as long as your PC and Wii are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Step 2: Get Webbed up
To tap into your PC you’ll need to use the Wii’s Opera web browser. If you’ve already downloaded it, fire it up and tap in www.mycast.orb.com. You might also want to save it to your bookmarks.

If you haven’t downloaded the Opera browser yet, you can grab it from the Wii Shop channel, although it’ll cost you 500 Wii points (around £2.50)

Once it’s loaded, and you’ve tapped in the Orb address above, it’ll load up a page showing all the files you’ve got stored on your PC. Click on one using the Wii Remote, and it’ll start to play. Orb converts everything on the fly, so the Wii can play back any media, in any format. That means no hassle, no hiccups, just streaming media and movies straight to your telly!

Step 3: Tap into on-demand TV
Bored of the files you’ve already got on your computer? How about some on-demand TV from the BBC? Point the Wii’s web browser to www.defaced.co.uk/wiiplayer and you’ll see the Beeb’s iPlayer re-designed for the Wii. It puts the last seven days’ TV and radio at your fingertips, as well as splashing it all over the big screen. Clever, eh?

Must have accessories
Wi-Fi router – You’ll need to have your PC and Wii on the same network to stream movies, music and photos between them. The simplest way to do that is using a Wi-Fi router.
