How to make your house burglar proof
June 15, 2009 by Insider Staff
Whether it’s securing your PC, thief-proofing your house or making sure you catch trespassers in the act, there’s technology to help. Follow our simple steps, and you’ll turn your house into a burglar’s nightmare in minutes!
Step 1: Keep an eye on things
Wireless webcams let you keep an eye on every part of your property. Place them within sight of the perimeter, or even indoors, and set the included software to capture images when movement is detected.
If anyone tries their luck at your back door, you’ll have their face recorded for the local constabulary. You can even tap into your webcams over the web to keep an eye on things while you’re away from home!
Step 2: Guard your data
Check out our guide to securing your computer and you’ll make sure no sensitive data falls into the wrong hands should a burglar make off with your PC.In short, you should always encrypt secret information, either using software or an external hard drive with encryption built in.
Step 3: Arm the alarms!
Fitting a burglar alarm to your home remains one of the most effective theft deterrents, and new wireless technology means there’s no need to trail cables or fiddle with connections. Just place sensors in each room, sync them with a central control box, and you’re home will be protected from intrusion.
Setting up alarms like this takes minutes, and they’re just as effective as wired counterparts.
Must-have accessories
Safe – You can’t encrypt everything, so invest in a safe to keep your important documents and valuables out of sight. Stick it under the stairs, and use it to keep passports, bank statements and other sensitive documents. You’ll thank yourself when you dodge the queues for a replacement later!
