How to secure your important PC files from prying eyes
June 29, 2009 by Insider Staff
It’s hard to avoid storing sensitive information on your computer, but keeping it secure isn’t nearly as tricky as you might think.
Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a hacker-proof PC in no time, as well as guarding against thieves targeting your sensitive files.
Step 1: Protect yourself online
The Internet is brimming with hackers and potential data thieves. But you can secure your PC with simple anti-virus and firewall software. Install it, and your data will instantly be protected from online crooks and scallywags. You’ll also have added protection from viruses and malicious software that can easily be contracted and wipe your precious files.
Step 2: Encrypt your files
Encrypting your files means you’ll be the only person who lays eyes on their contents. Bag yourself some encryption software and you’ll easily apply passwords and scramble their contents.
If you don’t fancy using software, you can also use an external hard drive with built in encryption to secure sensitive files.
Step 3: Use your fingers!
If you want to secure your PC without remembering passwords, you can use fingerprint recognition to log in with the swipe of a digit!
Grab a fingerprint scanner to log into your PC using your hands. It’s safe, secure, and means you’ll never have to worry about forgetting login names or passwords. Some software will even remember multiple passwords, or assign them to different fingers.

Online storage - Getting your sensitive files off the PC altogether is the safest way to keep them secure. Use an online storage service like BT’s Digital Vault or Apple’s MobileMe iDisk, to store files on a server. You’ll be able to access them from any web-connected PC, and they’re not going to get stolen!
