How to squeeze the most from your iPhone 3G

July 10, 2008 by Insider Staff

iPhone 3GThe iPhone isn’t just a phone. Nor are its extras limited to surfing the web and listening to music. It’s skills are myriad and complex, but squeezing more from your Apple handset needn’t be rocket science.

Follow our simple steps and we’ll soon have you wondering why you never discovered the iPhones extra skills before!

Step 1: Install apps
There are tons of extra applications available for the iPhone. They’re found by tapping on the App Store on the home page. You’ll need to have an iTunes account set up beforehand, which will need to be done through the iTunes store on a desktop PC or Mac.

Once that’s done, however, you’re free to add extra functions to your iPhone. Some are free, while others will charge a fee to download. Don’t worry though, most useful apps are also cheap. eBay and Yahoo both have iPhone software available for free, letting you scope online auctions or chat with friends.

Step 2: Swap headphones
Unlike the 2G version, the 3G iPhone will work happily with any headphones, thanks to its re-designed socket. Take advantage of it by ditching the included ear-fillers and plumping for some more satisfying headphones. You could even push the boat out and get a noise-cancelling pair, they’ll make the noisy morning commute much more bearable, as well as making sure your calls come in loud and clear!

Step 3: Use the extra speed!
The iPhone 3G’s main selling point is its extra speed. Make use of it by visiting websites that serve streaming media. One of the best is the BBC’s on-demand radio site. Point the iPhone’s browser here and you’ll find podcasts from the Beeb’s biggest stations and most highly-paid stars. Just poke one with your finger and the iPhone will start playing it in seconds.

Must-have accessories
TV cable – As well as playing music and making calls, the iPhone 3G will also play video. Using its screen is fine when you’re out and about, but when you’re back at home or visiting a friend, use this TV cable to show your flicks on the big screen.
