PSP Phone-y

June 29, 2008 by Insider Staff

PSPWhat has to be one of the ultimate ‘will they won’t they’ stories in techville has just received a new twist. Rumours are rife that there is going to be a PSP Phone, and it’ll be here in time for Xmas next year. But, our little birdies tell us this rumour is more of a PSP phone-y than phone.

Whilst the idea is nice, and the reasons for doing it are obvious, we’ve yet to see anything real to back it up. Sure, PSP’s getting beaten hands down by the DS, and Nokia is fighting back with N-Gage – not to mention the ensuing iPhone threat – but that doesn’t necessarily mean the next generation of PSP will be a mobile dialer too.

Still, we like to have a little fun here at The Insider. What if the rumours turned out to be true? Well, we reckon the Ultimate N-Gage slayer could also come with enough memory for a mini-movie theatre and pack more tunes than a Beatles back catalogue. This would turn the stylish wrist-rattler into the ultimate palm-sized entertainment centre – complete with its own phone box.

Right now the closest you’ll get to the PSP phone is sticky-taping your PSP to your, er, phone. If it does go ahead though, expect some tasty features.

Top talents
PlayStation on your phone
With fully licensed PlayStation gaming in your pocket it beats the pants off Nokia’s N-Gage, by a country mile. Surely, the ultimate gaming phone.

Hook it up to your PS3

Thanks to remote play you can play PS3 games whilst away from the console. Just sync it with your PS3 and get ready to play, or download new games straight to the phone.

The world in your pocket, and more
Browse the web or use remote play to log into Life With Playstation, featuring real time news and weather from around the world, or engage in a spot of social networking on the Second Life-like Playstation Home.

Feral youths a plenty
With a palm-size multi-plex in your pocket, the PSP phone will surely attract untold numbers of track-suited youths just lining up to ‘hang out’ in your hand. With errant screams of ‘bovvered’ there’ll be no end to the entertainment.

Going up against

Sony Ericsson F305 – Sony won’t play the sharing game, so little bro’ Sony Ericsson has tricked out its own gaming mobile with over 300 games available, and shaky accelerometers for a more interactive gaming experience.

Nokia N96
– This behemoth from Finnish phone fanciers Nokia packs N-Gage gaming on top of 3G, Wi-Fi, and an iPod worrying 16-gig of flash memory.

iPhone 3G – The iPhone gets an upgrade with a dosing of 3G, smoother styling and a 3.5mm jack compatible with all headphones for jamming with the phone that doubles up as an iPod. Games such as Super Monkey Ball make it no slouch in the gaming department either.
