Top tips for next-gen cooking: The ultimate in high-tech appliances
June 18, 2008 by Insider Staff
Still cooking with a naked gas flame? Remind us not to come to your house for tea! For the ultimate in haute cuisine you need to go high tech.
There are more advantages of switching to a top of the range, err, range, than we’ve had hot dinners from them. Don’t worry though, switching cookers isn’t a tricky or expensive process, and you’ll reap the benefits immediately.
Step 1: Make the move to electric. It’s that simple. Gas cookers are amongst the least efficient around. Electric hobs concentrate heat under the pan more precisely, while fan-assisted ovens squeeze more cooking power from the heat they produce.
As a result, most electric cookers are much more energy efficient than the gas-powered competition. It’s typical for all-electric cookers to boast A or B grades, while gas fuelled alternatives struggle to match them.
Step 2: See the light! The halogen light that is! The latest microwave ovens pack halogen bulbs too, crisping your food with the power of their super-powerful bulbs.
When coupled with conventional microwaves, they help to roast the outside of your food, while the microwave process penetrates your dinner to do its business from the inside out. Halogen cooking results in less time between food entering the oven and landing on your plate. Never a bad thing.
Step 3: Upgrade to induction. The holy grail of high tech cooking is an induction hob. It uses electromagnetic waves to heat special pans, and in turn, the food inside them.
Because the electromagnetism only affects metal in contact with the hob, the surface itself isn’t hot to the touch, meaning no more burnt on food, or scalded fingers.
Best of all it’s incredibly energy efficient, and when you remove the pan from the hob, it’ll switch off completely, instantly saving even more energy.
Must-have accessories
Dishwashers – There’s no point upgrading your kitchen to the latest high-tech cooking appliances, and then washing up by hand. Get yourself a top-notch dishwasher. The best ones use less water than an old-fashioned washing up bowl, so they’re less effort and better for the environment!
