US gets Garmin nuvifone G60

October 1, 2009 by Insider Staff

garmin-nuvifoneIt seems like an age since we got our first tantalising glimpse of the Garmin nüvifone G60 (in fact it was January 2008), but the satnav-flavoured touchscreen phone is finally poised to hit a major market. Sadly it’s the US rather than Blighty, but surely a UK launch can’t be too far off?

The Garmin nüvifone G60 will hit US network AT&T on 4th October, available for $299 (£185) with a two-year contract. According to AT&T the G60 is the only phone to “fully integrate the world’s best-selling GPS navigator with voice, data and mobile web.”

There are preloaded maps and “a real GPS receiver” with Garmin’s HotFix technology, plus a 30-day trial of the nüvifone Premium Connected Service. This will normally cost $5.99 (£3.75) a month and offers traffic updates, weather reports and other handy info.

Also on offer is Wi-Fi, a 3-megapixel camera with auto focus, 4GB of built-in memory and an HTML web browser. It sounds like a solid enough package, but not quite the all-round world-beater it seemed when it was first announced the best part of two years ago. Still, it could well find its niche as the best satnav-toting smartphone on the planet – and we’ll let you know once we get our hands on it.
