How to use your iPod Touch as an e-book reader

June 9, 2008 by Insider Staff

iPod TouchYou know your iPod Touch can play music, videos and photos. But did you know you can use it to read books too?

Follow our simple tutorial, and we’ll have you flipping pages with Apple’s wondrous touchscreen in no time.

Step 1: Load up on books
Before you can read e-books on your iPod Touch, you’ll need some! There are plenty free to download online, but ebookmall.com has one of the best selections. What’s more, they’re available in several formats. For the purposes of this tutorial, you’ll need them in plain text or Microsoft Word format.

Step 2: Convert-a-book
The iPod touch’s software lacks the ability to read e-books in their native form, so you’ll need to convert them. Luckily, there’s handy software available to take the pain out of the process. Head to Merlin Software’s website, and grab their free eBooks to Images application.

Install it on your PC, load up the e-book you want, and in just a couple of clicks you’ll have the document converted to an image in JPEG format. Just transfer that to your iPod, either by dropping it into your My Photos folder, or by selecting the directory where it’s saved under your iPod’s settings in iTunes.

Step 3: Flick through at your leisure
Once your e-book images are synced to your iPod, you’ll be able to tap into them through the photos application. Use the iPod’s touchscreen as normal to flick through, and you’ll find it’s one of the simplest ways to carry an entire library in your pocket.

Must have accessories
Audiobooks – If you tire of reading printed words, check out the iPod’s ability to play audiobooks. You’ll find them for sale in the iTunes store, or at Audible.com. There are thousands to choose from, and the iPod’s software will even let you adjust their playback speed without changing the pitch. That’s a special feature reserved for audiobooks, so you can choose how fast you spin through them.
