Dunhill unveils debonair DAB radio

June 5, 2008 by Insider Staff

Dunhill AD88 DAB radioAlfred Dunhill, purveyor of the finest leather goods and cigar kit, has turned his luxury hand to the world of high-end audio. The painfully swanky gentleman’s outfitter has teamed up with top hi-fi brand Meridian to create the AD88 music system, an uncompromisingly smart DAB/AM/FM radio and DVD/CD player.

As you’d expect, the AD88 is something of a looker, all minimalist lines and piano lacquered wood (you can almost smell the leather and cigar smoke), but thankfully the designers have paid just as much attention to the sonic side of things: as well as pumping radio and CD music through the 80 watt 2.1 speakers, users can also dock their iPod at the back, listening to its contents and replenishing its battery at the same time. Excellent… now where did we leave our credit card?

Top talents
Versatility - It’s just one small box, but it delivers bags of functions: DVD, CD, DAB radio… it’ll even buddy up with your iPod.

Crisp digital radio – The DAB tuner delivers the keys to a much slicker radio experience: easy digital tuning, cleaner sound and more stations.

Aesthetic brilliance – It’s made by Dunhill and costs a pretty penny – little wonder this is probably the finest-looking micro-system money can buy.

Coming out: July

Going up against
LG PC-12 – Don’t let its curvy rugby ball shape fool you: this is one serious piece of entertainment kit, delivering CD, iPod and radio in one tiny package.

Roth ALFiE – The ALFiE offers a similar selection of talents (DVD, iPod and radio) to the Dunhill, but doesn’t deal with DAB. On the plus side, it’s a lot kinder on your bank account.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 3200 – Legendary Danish design-meisters B&O have fitted this compact radio and CD player with a hard disk able to store almost 400 CDs’ worth of tunes. Nifty!
