Top 50 Nintendo DS games dissected

May 29, 2008 by Insider Staff

Nintendo DSNintendo’s dual-screen touch-tastic handheld is rightfully regarded as the finest of the pocket consoles. Not only does the DS Lite sport a touchscreen and microphone for innovative controls, but it boasts an unparalleled library of top games – a catalogue which we’ve dived headfirst into, in order to pick out the best thumb-blisterers of the bunch.

Want to know which DS games deserve your hard-earned coin? Look no further…

Top of the tree
Mario Kart
Best price: £22.95 on 29 May 2008
Not just a cutesy racer, Mario Kart remains every bit as addictive as it was when it first emerged on the SNES in 1992. And with a fantastic multiplayer mode available via the DS’s Wi-Fi connection, this is one of the few handheld games you’ll be playing with others just as much (if not more often) than alone.

Rising star
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Best price: £27.97 on 29 May 2008
Think “puzzles” on the DS and the various brain-training games spring to mind, but this puzzler manages to stand out from the pack by arranging its scores of mind-bending grey matter-teasers around a great (and surprisingly dark) story and beautiful 2D artwork. The puzzles are tough, too – so this is more intended for adults than its cutesy looks suggest.
Up against: Big Brain Academy

Unsung hero
Tetris
Best price: £24.92 on 29 May 2008
Perhaps “unsung” is the wrong word, but because of its age (it’s been almost 20 years since it appeared on the Game Boy) people often forget how brilliant Tetris really is. The block-stacking, line-creating gameplay has spawned a million pretenders, but none come close to matching the addictive balance of speed and simplicity.
Up against: Jenga

Loved by experts
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Best price: £14.92 on 29 May 2008
Designed specifically for the DS and full of quirky, brilliant control touches (you blow into the console’s microphone to extinguish candles!), this is yet another compelling adventure in the Legend of Zelda series. Not too short, not too long and addictive throughout, it’s basically one of the very best titles you can put on your DS.
Up against: Pokemon Pearl
