Wowwee Rovio becomes your robotic eyes and ears
May 23, 2008 by Insider Staff
Modern life can take its toll and you can’t be everywhere at once, so Rovio is rolling onto the robot scene to take a load off. Brainchild of creator WowWee, the company behind Robosapien and the upcoming Wall-E robot toy to accompany this summer’s Pixar movie blockbuster, the Rovio could become the ultimate budget home security guard.
This pint-sized robo amigo features an onboard camera, microphone and Wi-Fi so you can leave him at home and tap into what he’s seeing via your web browser. He can even help you issue commands to your minions when you’re out of town thanks to the two-way communication.
You don’t need to worry about him going unfed while you’re away, he’s clever enough to make his way back to the charging station whenever he needs some extra juice. He’s also pretty good at finding his way around, thanks to his Northstar navigation software, ensuring he won’t go a stray.
Top talents
Wandering Wi-Fi – once he’s hooked into your home network, you can see exactly what he’s seeing so you can keep a virtual eye on things.
Two-way talkback – Perfect for out-of-town interrogations, Rovio will relay your voice for you so you can chat like you were actually there, albeit in a slightly freakish disembodied kind of way.
Sensible snacking – Rovio knows where his bed is and will return to it when its time suck up some AC to revive his weary transistors.
Coming out: Summer 2008
Going up against
Roboquad – This little electronic guard dog will keep an eye on your pad while you’re out. His sound sensors can scan for intruders and his aggression level is triggered by sensory input. You don’t want to make him angry…
Roboreptile – Looking for the fastest fighting robot in the west? Roboreptile can walk on four legs and run on two, and you might want to keep your pinkies away from those gnashers.
Lego Mindstorms NXT – For that proper Frankenstein bond with your robo buddy it’s only right that you toil for a good couple of hours putting him together before declaring “He’s ALIVE!”
