Top 50 Xbox 360 games dissected

May 21, 2008 by Insider Staff

Xbox 360Thanks to some recent price-trimming, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is now the most affordable of all the next-gen consoles. But don’t take that as a sign it’s underpowered – the 360 has more great-looking hi-def games than the much pricier PS3, plus in Xbox LIVE the best online service around.

If you’ve just dropped some cash on an Xbox 360, you’re probably on the prowl for some killer games. So we figured we’d delve into the Top 50 and pick out some real stunners – so you don’t have to.

Top of the tree
GTAIVGrand Theft Auto IV
Best price: £37.49 on 21 May 2008
It’s the game that lived up to the hype, shiftng an unprecedented six million copies in a matter of days and transporting most the planet’s gaming population to the crime-ridden cesspit of Liberty City – a fictionalised version of New York. Sticking you in the shoes of immigrant Niko Bellic and making this giant, intricately-detailed urban sprawl your adventure playground, GTA IV is the finest free-roaming crim ‘em up we’ve ever laid eyes on.
Up against: Crackdown

Rising star
Rainbow Six Vegas 2Tom Clancy’s Rainbox Six Vegas 2
Best price: £29.95 on 21 May 2008
If you like your first-person shooters to require a bit of brain-power, the newest installment in the long-running Rainbox Six saga should be right up your street. Putting you at the head of a three-man team and charging you to rid Las Vegas of a terrorist threat, the game forces you to combine trigger-happy shooting with thoughtful, but simple, operations planning.
Up against: Army of Two

Unsung hero
Ace Combat 6 Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Best price: £25.96 on 21 May 2008
Massive in Japan but fairly unknown elsewhere, the Ace Combat series sees you suit up and grab the joystick of various types of attack aircraft – but this is strictly straightforward arcade fun, not ultra-realistic simulation. This latest edition is exclusive to the Xbox 360, and features eye-poppingly huge vistas and massive mid-air battles.
Up against: Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII

Loved by experts
Lost OdysseyLost Odyssey
Best price: £29.98 on 21 May 2008
Created by one of the chaps behind Final Fantasy, this Xbox 360-exclusive roleplaying game has a distinctly Japanese flavour. While this makes it more linear than Western RPGs, its top notch story and art direction make it one of the most absorbing and visually stunning titles on Microsoft’s console.
