Third party apps for Skype
September 15, 2009 by Insider Staff
Changes are afoot for Skype, the internet phone service, that’s for sure. Owner eBay is spinning it off, but that’s not all that’s in store: Skype is planning a brand new platform to let third party developers build on top of Skype services. Anyone fancy making Skype video calls from within Facebook?
Currently, Skype has offered very little in the way of third-party support, with only programs like iSkoot for mobiles able to take advantage of it VOIP tech. But TechCrunch has been talking to Skype general manager of audio and video, Jonathan Christensen about the company’s plans, and they include a “next generation platform” which will “open many more opportunities for developers to build on Skype services.”
That’s all Skype can pledge at the moment, but it’s a promising start. It could eventually mean a Skype SDK, meaning any third party developers can integrate the Skype phone service into their apps, which would be great for social networking sites and clients, as well as games. We’ll keep you posted all the way on this one, as you can bet some major changes to Skype are in the pipeline.
