How to squeeze more from DAB radio

September 14, 2009 by Insider Staff

Vita Audio R2DAB radios don’t just pick up your favourite stations in better quality. And they’re not just useful for finding a few new channels either. What they’re really good for is exploring the extra features digital technology allows.

Follow our simple steps, and you’ll soon be enjoying digital radio in a whole new way.

Step 1: It’s digital, and it records.
If you’ve got a DAB radio with a slot in the side for a memory card, that means its equipped with the talent to record digitally. Grab an appropriate card, shove it in, and check the menus for an option to capture what’s on.

Some advanced radios even let you set timed recordings, while others will transfer recordings to an MP3 player plugged in via USB. Keep your eyes peeled for SD card slots in the specs when choosing a new digital radio, and you’ll never miss a show again.

Step 2: Pause and rewind
Even if your DAB radio doesn’t have an SD card slot, there’s a chance it can still pause and rewind radio using built-in memory. Check your tuner’s controls for a pause button and try pressing it. Think of it as like Sky+ for your DAB, it’ll mean you never miss the name of a song again, can re-cap traffic reports and weather, or just pause a programme next time you need to answer the phone.

Step 3: Intellitext
As well as receiving audio, your DAB radio grabs text from the air. You might’ve seen it scrolling across the display, telling you the station name, presenter’s details, or maybe even the phone number or e-mail address of the show.

That’s not all there is to digital text though. Look for a DAB radio with Intellitext functions, and it’ll keep receiving updates even when it’s in standby. Then, when you switch it on, you’ll be able to scroll through it at your own leisure.

Some sports stations use the service to provide a constantly updated results service. It’s fast, simple, and always accurate. Give it a go!

Must have accessories
DAB Aerial – DAB is great if you live in a city or large town, but can be troublesome in more rural areas. If you struggle to receive a DAB signal, try investing in a larger aerial. It’ll vastly improve the performance you get from your radio’s built in antenna, and could even help you pick up more stations.

Memory card – Once you start recording radio shows, you won’t be able to stop! Invest in a couple of SD cards to make sure you’ve always got space for your recordings, but beware to check your radio’s manual first, as not all size cards will work with all tuners.
