Apple kitting iPod Classic with camera?
September 1, 2009 by Insider Staff
Rumours of a camera for the next generation iPod Touch have been flying for a while, but could Apple be about to give the old school iPod Classic the ability to take photos too? Digitimes reckons it has found the evidence.
The iPod Classic is the iPod you want if you need to lug huge amounts of music around with you, but it is arguably due for a bit of a revamp. It still looks and operates pretty much like the original iPod, just a bit thinner with more storage. (Our own Ben Sillis has speculated that a beefed up iTouch could spell the end for the old timer) Could a bulk order of CMOS Image Sensor chips point to a 3.2 megapixel camera for the next version of the Classic?
Digitimes is reporting that digital imaging specialists OmniVision have signed a deal to become the sole suppliers of 3.2 megapixel CMOS imaging tech for upcoming releases of the iPod Touch, iPod Nano and iPod Classic, which will be launched in September.
It seems plausible enough – assuming Appl want to keep the iPod Classic alive it would seem a simple way to add new functionality without messing with the formua too much – and think of all the photos (and video, maybe?) you could store on that lovely 120GB hard drive..
