Apple TV to get real TV?
August 24, 2009 by Insider Staff
We’ve always been fans of what you can hack on to an Apple TV rather than the lil’ white set top box itself, but that could change in a big way: one industry expert reckons that Cupertino’s roadmap will lead to an Apple TV set. iFlatscreen, anyone?
It’s a way off, but Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster reckons that Apple TV will eventually evolve into a screened device taking pride of place in your living room. The first step he says, will be an updated Apple TV with an iTunes subscription.
If he’s right, that an exciting step for Apple TV, but only just the start. Munster foresees a wireless Apple TV screen within two years that would wireless sync with iPods, iPhones and Macs. “Such a device would command a premium among a competitive field of budget TVs; we believe Apple could differentiate itself with software that makes home entertainment simple and solves a pain point for consumers (complicated TV and component systems),” he writes.
It’s not the first time we’ve heard talk of an Apple TV set, but an analyst telling investors to bank on it is promising. Now admittedly Munster’s been hit and miss with Apple predictions in the past. He’s sided with the majority on the Apple tablet not popping up until 2010, but his claim of an ultra-cheap MacBook hasn’t happened. But we sure hope he’s on the money: just imagine an Apple TV that looks as fine as the Cinema Display monitor.
