Flash support for BlackBerry is happening!

August 21, 2009 by Insider Staff

FlashWe were more than a bit narked to hear that RIM’s BlackBerry power emailers weren’t lined up for Flash support along with most other smartphone platforms earlier this year, but now we know why the Canadian company wasn’t on Adobe’s list: it’s prepping BlackBerry Flash support itself!

According to Boy Genius Report (Which has a strong track record in BlackBerry leaks), RIM is planning to bring full Flash support (not Lite) to the BlackBerry browser, so you’ll be able to watch videos within webpages at the push of a button, just like the HTC Hero. RIM’s even hoping to offer Microsoft Silverlight support too to get all its bases covered.

There is of a course a slight catch. Considering how ropey the BlackBerry browser is at the moment, a good deal of leapfrogging will have to take place before Flash works on a BlackBerry. RIM won’t be able to get it working until faster data speeds (Namely, 4G) arrive, so it won’t be until next Summer. Could we have some interim, Wi-Fi solution, maybe RIM? Purty please?
