60GB Xbox 360 to enter console graveyard

August 17, 2009 by Insider Staff

Microsoft Xbox 360So it looks like the rumours were bang on–the–money. Microsoft is preparing to kill off the 60GB Xbox 360, bringing the price of the Xbox 360 Elite down and possibly making the bog standard Arcade model pricier. Want to know how Microsoft is planning to counter the threat of the PS3 Slim? Then read on.

Microsoft has some big thinking to do with the PS3 Slim all set to step out of the shadows this week. And it appears its plans to bring an end to the Xbox 360 Premium, which packs a 60GB HDD, are spot on. Retailers have come out and confirmed that the Premium will die off and be replaced by a cheaper 120GB packing Xbox 360 Elite.

That certainly makes sense as the need for ever more storage for new updates, downloaded movies and games from Xbox Live Arcade becomes of greater importance to your average punter.

However, the same retail sources also say that the hard drive-less Xbox 360 Arcade, the basic model of Microsoft’s best–seller, might actually get a price increase, up from its cheap–as–chips £129 tag. There’s no word on how much an Xbox 360 Elite will now cost, but expect an announcement this week, straight outta Gamescom.
