Freeview getting ITV HD this year!
August 12, 2009 by Insider Staff
Credit crunch killed off your HD dreams? Fear not. ITV HD is making its way to Freeview this year, letting you get your weekly dose of Corrie, not to mention top class football, without having to pay a penny. The move is all down to a deal between the BBC and its commercial rival. Read on to get all the details.
ITV HD is only available on Freesat at the moment. But Freeview is going to be getting in on the action by the end of 2009, offering the hi–def channel for free. The move comes after the BBC leased bandwidth to its fiercest competitor to keep its dream alive. The BBC will start showing HD programmes on Freeview on 2 December.
It’s not expected to roll out nationwide, although some, currently unspecified areas, will be able to pick up The Bill and various scaremongering current affairs programmes from December. However, you will need a Freeview HD box, which you’ll struggle to pin down before 2010.
Freeview has come out and claimed half of the UK will be able to nab the 2010 World Cup on ITV HD. It’s a bold shout, but one that means you’ll be able to see England choke in the quarters in glorious hi–def. John Terry’s crocodile tears never looked so good.
