BBC iPlayer has 5 million users

iPlayerSure, you spend most evenings rewatching last week’s Eastenders and getting your head around Auntie’s worryingly Partridge–esque Football League Show on BBC iPlayer. But it seems you’re not the only one. A new Ofcom report shows a massive 5.2 million punters now use BBC iPlayer. That’s twice the amount compared to last year.

BBC iPlayer has got it made. Not only is it the outstanding way of getting TV on the web here in Blighty, it’s also ticking along nicely too. A new Ofcom report has said the VOD service has “significantly” changed the way watch TV, with 5.2 million users now involved.

iPlayer’s prevalence on mobile phones has been a big factor, with the likes of the Sony Ericsson W995 and C905 both signing up to play nice with the service. That means more people can watch on the move as well as on their desktop or Virgin+ box at home.

But who can compete? Well, iPlayer has some serious competition coming from Hulu, which is still in line for a UK launch next month. Add 4OD’s vast new back catalogue, and we’re looking forward to seeing those stats in a year’s time.
