CrunchPad tablet edges closer

August 3, 2009 by Insider Staff

CrunchPadThe CrunchPad, Silicon valley blog TechCrunch’s internet tablet, may have missed that July release window we heard about, but it’s edging closer to launch nonetheless. Now insiders are pegging the finished product for a November release. But will it be overshadowed by an Apple tablet?

TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad is shaping up to be quite the tatsy tablet: according to The Straits Times, it’s a 12-inch number with a 1.6GHz Atom processor and 1GB of RAM and entirely browser-based. The paper’s also confirmed that the CrunchPad will have Wi-Fi and 3G built in so you’ll be able to get to grips with all that lovely cloud computing on the couch, but the pricetag is now closer to the $400 mark (£240) than $300.

The CrunchPad is now reportedly due out in November, but that delay could make all the difference: in the last fortnight a slew of rumours have escaped Cupertino, suggesting an Apple tablet is on the way, somewhere between September and early 2010. It’ll likely cost double what the CrunchPad will, but just whispers alone could keep people holding back from buying the blogger’s touchscreen slate. Here’s hoping the Apple tablet gets leaked good and proper soon so we can decide.
