Nintendo DS outsells all consoles in June

July 21, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nintendo DSiIts place as housewives’ favourite has been assured for years. And the Nintendo DS and its cooler, newer sibling, the DSi, are continuing to make other consoles green with envy. See, Nintendo has just worked out that DS and DSi shifted more than all other consoles combined across the pond in June. Read on to see Nintendo’s official bragging statement.

The monthly NPD results, which tell gaming’s biggest players who’s top dog, are often a source of much backslapping for Nintendo. And the June figures are no exception. According to a release from Japan’s number one the, “DS and DSi combined to sell more than 766,000 units, more than all current-generation consoles combined.”

Now that’s no mean feat. The relatively new DSi will surely have helped. It sold a whacking 424,000, compared to the old–school DS Lite’s 342,000. On their own that’s impressive, together they show just how much work the Sony PSP Go is going to have to do to catch up when it hits the streets on 1 October.

Nintendo says its US sales boom is down to punters wanting, “…quality experiences and great value for the whole family.” So, as long as your Nan keeps her hands clamped to Brain Training on her DS, it looks like the others will be playing catch up.
