Tsera sues Apple over touch tech

July 21, 2009 by Insider Staff

ipod-familyTsera may not be a multinational corporation like Apple with revenues in the billions, but that’s not stopped it from taking the Cupertino company to court, claiming it swiped its control technology for the iPod. Not only have Steve Jobs and co allegedly been pilfering, but Microsoft, iRiver and a whole host of competitors. It’s a battle of David versus several Goliaths, but is it all destined to end in tears?

According to Tsera, which just filed a patent infringement claim in Texas, no fewer than 20 companies – including big hitters like Apple, Microsoft, LG, Philips, Cowon, Bang & Olufsen and even iPhone cloner Meizu – pilfered from an unspecified 2003 patent that “recognizes different swipe movements on a touchpad” on their respective PMPs and MP3 players. So buttons, basically.

Tsera believes that Apple has known about the supposed patent infringement since 2004, and yet blithely carried on churning out click wheel controlled iPods. Naturally, Tesra wants money and scalps and, in the case of Apple, even “enhanced” damages though whether it’s harder to get cash from an apple than blood from a stone remains to be seen.
