Sony unleashes new Walkmans

July 15, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony Walkman E440Fancy a new Sony Walkman? Good, because the Big S has just rolled up at our virtual doorstep and dropped off news of two new models: the rejigged Walkman E440 series video and Walkman B140 series. Want to know more? Hop in and get the full skinny now.

The Sony Walkman E440 series video is the Big S’s latest attempt to knock the iPod nano off its Eiffel Tower–sized pedestal. And with a sharp frame, a UI to match the slick Sony X series and the usual smattering of killer features, it’ll doubtless appeal to hardcore audiophiles.

As well as the 2–inch QVGA screen, music mad MP3 fans will be able to easily transfer tracks via drag and drop or, even better, iTunes 8.1, using Content Transfer. Sound on the E440 series has been beefed up thanks to a dynamic normaliser to balance volume levels. And perhaps best of all, there’s support for video file conversion, as well as er, DRM–laden WMA and WMV. MP3 and MP4 are of course included, as well as AAC+.

The Walkman E440 series video is unsurprisingly clever when it comes to its battery, offering an iPod nano–battering 30 hours of music and 6 hours of vids. And it’ll come in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB flavours.

The Walkman B140 series has already started kicking it in Japan, but its due to hit the UK this month too. It’s USB style offers 18 hours of playback and a 3 minute charge giving a whacking 90 minutes of tunes, plus 2GB or 4GB variations. There’s also Sony’s Zappin tech, playing a few snatched seconds so you can make your choice for the commute in a neat new way.

Both the B series and E series come with FM radios and are due to hit stores this very month. Stay tuned for a full unboxing and review soon.
