Free Twitter coming to O2

July 14, 2009 by Insider Staff

TwitterO2 and Twitter have today hopped into bed together, unveiling plans to bring free access to this year’s hottest social network. The deal kicks off next month and follows a similar tie–in with Vodafone. Want to know how you can Tweet your pals beyond boredom for nowt? Then you’d best read on.

Kicking off in August, O2’s free Twitter deal is simple. You can switch on text notification in Twitter, allowing you to pick and choose the followers you want to keep up–to–date with on your mobile. You’ll then get tweets and direct messages free of charge.

There is a small snag though. O2 has said it will restrict it’s social networking nutty users to 600 tweets each a month. Now that might sound a lot, but once you get going, it’s clear that Twitter can eat up your entire day in a whirlwind of fastidious 140 character chats and arguments.

O2 reckons it’s a winner, with their head of content telling The Guardian that, “…mobile will become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites.” We’re not going to argue, especially with phones from the Nokia N97 to the 3 INQ1 with Facebook and Twitter at their heart.

Word on the street that with Vodafone and now O2 signed up, Orange and T–Mobile are next in line for the Twitter treatment.
