Philips rubs extra polish into portable audio

Philips SA52One of the smartest dressed songsters we’ve seen in a while, the upcoming Philips SA52 GoGear portable jukebox is hoping to shame style rivals such as the iPod nano.

As part of its GoGear tribe, the 4GB-toting SA52 has serious smarts as well as a killer body. See, hiding inside its slimline noir suit is some nifty audio upscaling voodoo.

Philips special ‘Full Sound’ technology’ claims to be able to transform your regular flavoured, pedestrian sounding MP3 tunes into CD-quality polyphonic dynamite. If your ears are used to audio velvet, then the SA52 GoGear might just get the nod above its MP3 rivals.

What’s in store? – With Philips’ Full Sound’ audio trickery onboard, you can perhaps dumb down your MP3 quality to fit more, However the SA52’s 4GB memory can stash around 1,000 average-sized MP3, AAC and WMA tunes.

Video friendly – The SA52 GoGear isn’t just an audio boffin. It’s also boasting a sparkly and sizeable 2.8-inch QVGA-quality display to watch your WMV vids on the bounce.

Juiced-up – Being able to last out a busy day of audio is of paramount importance. Luckily, the SA52 has marathon battery stamina to survive an intense audio-video workout, with 25 hours music playback and five hours video pleasure on tap.

Coming out: July 2008

Going up against
Apple iPod Nano 4GB Grey (3rd Generation) – Apple’s card-sized maestro remains the most desirable mini audio video player on the scene. Not even its smallish two-inch display can dampen the love.

Creative Zen 4GB Black – If you’re a serial video snacker while on the fly, you’re going to need a sizeable display to avoid squinting at the footage. The diddy Zen obliges with a 2.5-inch, 16.7-million colour Bobby Dazzler.

Sony NWZ-A816B 4GB Black
Sony’s dinky music player is like Ali up against the ropes – it can go the distance against the odds, with a rather impressive epic 30 hours juice time.
