Rock Band going console-free?

July 9, 2009 by Insider Staff

Rock Band 2Rock Band’s top boss has said he can see a future where music games dispense with consoles altogether. That means plugging guitars into your TV, just like you’d put a real axe into an amp. Read on to see just what Rock Band’s main man thinks could be the future of music gaming.

Harmonix’s head honcho Josh Randall, whose company are behind the best–selling Rock Band franchise, reckons games like his, and Guitar Hero, could soon be console free.

In a chat with Videogamer, he said he could, “foresee a future where maybe you don’t even have a console. Your instrument can have all these songs and you just plug it into your TV.” That means Rock Band, and even the likes of DJ Hero too.

It’s certainly novel and might help drive the cost of titles such as Rock Band down. After all, you wouldn’t need to buy that £40 disc as well as two guitars and a plastic drum kit.

However, it does throw up some more serious issues for wannabe bedroom rockers. What if you prefer shredding out classic guitar solos wirelessly? And what would it mean for compatibility with other games.

It’s definitely an interesting idea. But one we’re taking with a generous pinch of salt for now.
