PlayStation Eye gets Project Natal-style makeover

July 6, 2009 by Insider Staff

PlayStation EyeThe Sony PlayStation Eye wasn’t far from our thoughts when we first peeped Microsoft’s Project Natal at E3 in June. Now a new Sony patent shows PlayStation Eye recognising everyday objects for using in–game, something Microsoft reckons Natal can do too. Read on to find out just what Sony’s plotting.

Sony’s PlayStation Eye was right at the core of the Big S’s new Motion Control system shown off at E3. But it seems that bizarre magic wand isn’t the only Wii–bashing controller Sony has up its sleeve, according to a patent unearthed by Siliconera.

It shows the PlayStation Eye mapping everyday objects from books to bottles, which can then be used in–game to control whatever you’re up to. Sony reckons it can map any 3D object – all you’ll need to do is show the PlayStation Eye what you’re holding, rotate it and it’ll do the rest.

Sony even touts the possibility of switching an object “on” or “off” just by holding it up or down. This would definitely put the PlayStation Eye right up with their with Project Natal.  Sadly though, it looks like we’ll be waiting until at least late 2010 for either the revamped PlayStation Eye and Project Natal to take pride of place underneath our LCD.
